It Can Wait – Distracted Driving

A National Epidemic

Each day in the United States, over 8 people are killed and 1,161 injured in crashes that are reported to involve a distracted driver. It’s an extremely prevalent problem in the US with teenagers. However, adults are just as guilty. Distracted driving encompasses a variety of activities such as eating or sleeping. The most common form is the use of electronic devices. In 2014 alone, 3,179 were killed in distracted driving crashes.

Here is a powerful video as part of AT&T’s new ad campaign, “The Unseen.” It proves how life can change in the blink of an eye — and it’s enough to give you chills.

Tips for Driving Distraction-Free

Distracted driving is never okay. Here are some safety tips to avoid texting while driving:

  • Make a habit about thinking of calls or texts you need to send before your trip.
  • If you aren’t driving alone, select a friend to be your designated texter while you’re behind the wheel.
  • Hide your phone somewhere in the car where you can’t peak at it or silence your notifications. Try putting it in the glove compartment or in a purse/bag.
  • Consider whether glancing at your phone is worth risking your own safety or that of others in your car and on the road.
  • Search possible apps that block incoming messages and alert your friends when you are driving and cannot respond at the moment.
  • If you cannot wait, pull over when you can do so safely.

There are numerous pledges to hold you accountable for your actions. Maybe, picturing your name on the pledge will help you keep your thumbs off the phone and save a life.
