New Highway 152 Bridge to Ease Traffic Congestion for Liberty and North Kansas City. Construction is set for summer 2019.

Liberty, MO – The nearly mile-long southern edge of the Liberty Triangle is about to get a $26 million overhaul this summer- with the construction of a new Highway 152 bridge over I-35 as the centerpiece.

Also, Kansas Street between the interstate and Highway 291 will be widened to six lanes in each direction. And the 291/Kansas St. interchange will be rebuilt.

The 152 bridge that links Liberty and Kansas City, North is set to come down on June 1, 2019. Construction of the new bridge is planned to last four months.

Liberty City Councilman Jeff Watt says they’ve been waiting a while.

“We had to wait for the state to get its money together,” says Watt. “If you recall five years ago MODOT declared they had no money and they had to cancel projects, sadly the 152 bridge was the first project canceled back then.”

Now the project is back on.

The new bridge over I-35, two bridges actually, will have a hybrid diverging diamond traffic flow. That’s the traffic pattern that allows for dedicated left-turn lanes.

“We’re cautiously optimistic,” says Watt. “We know it’s gonna be painful (have the bridge down for four months), we know it’s going to take some time to get through it. But when it’s done, it’s going to be unrecognizable, because the traffic is going to flow so much better.”
