Drivers Going 100mph Before Deadly KCMO Crash

Police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred Wednesday morning at East Red Bridge Road and Blue Ridge Boulevard.

KCPD reports that street-racing may have been the cause of the accident. A witness reported he saw the drivers while on his way home, and at the time he saw them they were going about 100mph. The witness reports the cars, one a thunderbird and the other a sedan, seemed to be chasing each other. Police reports the two cars sped through the intersection, running a red light. At the same time a Lexus ran the same light from a different direction.

The driver of the Lexus was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the thunderbird was taken to the hospital, critically injured. The other apparent racer sped away. Police have not identified the driver of the Lexus or provided an update on the injured thunderbird driver.

Councilman Eric Bunch backed Vision Zero in Kansas City. He has a goal to help stop all traffic fatalities by 2030. He also supported an ordinance passed last month for higher penalties for street racers.

The new ordinance allows KCPD to ticket first time offenders for $100, and they could face 30 days in jail. The ordinance will also allow police to impound the vehicle used for street racing.
