Missouri EMT Fights for Workers’ Compensation After Contracting COVID-19

A St. Louis EMT is fighting to receive workers’ compensation after a devastating COVID-19 diagnosis left her lungs filled with holes and unable to work. Liz Smith described her passion for working as an EMT, stating on one of her last calls she helped deliver a baby.

Then, in February 2020 a mysterious illness changed her life forever. She described three days of symptoms that manifested in difficulty breathing, ultimately culminating in cardiac arrest. After nearly dying three times, Smith spent a month in a coma and another two months in the hospital, rendering her unable to work. Smith was left with permanent damage to her lungs, and is still feeling the damage caused by this illness today.

When Smith filed a workers compensation claim with the City, it was denied. The city stated “There are no records to substantiate the claim.” In 2020 the state approved $316 million in workers’ compensation benefit settlements for COVID-19 injuries and fatalities. Many of these settlements were in the healthcare industry.

Smith states she plans to appeal the outcome of her claim.
