Dash Cams: An Essential Tool

In a past series, we talked about car accidents and one of the things we mentioned was dash cams. Recently, we signed up a client where a dash cam video was an important piece of evidence in making her claim for the injuries she sustained in an accident.

We quickly Googled dash cams in preparation for today’s episode, and there are many options available for purchase. Some insurance companies will even reward you if you have a dash cam and exercise safe driving habits. While we’re not a fan of giving insurance companies access to our driving habits, having a dash cam can be a game-changer in the case of an accident.

For instance, if there’s no witness to an accident and it’s your word against the other driver’s, having dash cam footage can provide the necessary evidence to support your claim. Police can only go off the evidence available at the scene, and if it’s a word-against-word situation, it’s challenging to make a claim. A dash cam video can make a significant difference.

Real-Life Example

Recently, we had a client who was proceeding through an intersection with a green light when another driver turned in front of her, causing a collision. There was a question about who had the right of way. Fortunately, an independent witness had a dash cam running in his vehicle, which showed that our client had a green light. This video was crucial evidence in making the claim because it proved that the other driver was at fault.

In another case, a commercial vehicle’s dash cam video showed our client hitting the truck as it was turning left in front of her. The dash cam footage sealed the deal and showed that the truck driver was at fault.

Black Box Data: Capturing Crucial Evidence

The other important tool we want to discuss is black box data. Officially known as electronic control modules, these devices record data such as vehicle speed and braking. All modern cars have them, and they can lock in data from the moments leading up to a collision. This data can be crucial in proving who was at fault in an accident.

Real-Life Example

We recently had a client who was involved in an accident after stopping at a stop sign just past a traffic-controlled intersection. Multiple witnesses reported that the other driver was speeding and ran a red light at the intersection. We quickly acted to get the black box data from the other driver’s vehicle, which showed that he was going 78 miles per hour in a 35-mph zone when he collided with our client.

In conclusion, dash cams and black box data are essential tools in personal injury law. They provide crucial evidence that can make or break a claim. If you haven’t already, consider getting a dash cam for your vehicle and always be aware of the importance of black box data in the event of an accident.
