Car crashes into building off New Halls Ferry Road, catches fire

Two people were taken to a local hospital after a car ran off the road and crashed into a building Monday afternoon in Florissant.

According to Sgt. Benjamin Granda, a spokesman for the St. Louis County Police Department, the crash occurred around 3 p.m. at the Tax Time business in the 11800 block of New Halls Ferry Road.

Granda said the car was struck by another vehicle, forcing it off the roadway. The car struck a utility pole before smashing against the building.

An adult woman and adult man were hospitalized. Their injuries are not life-threatening.

Police have not released any information on the other driver.

Calvin Flemons, the owner of the business, got a call from their alarm company and then immediately drove over to find his business was on fire.

“(The alarm company) said that they had a motion detector in the front, motion detector in the back, and window detectors, and we got a call back saying the building was on fire,” he said.

Before the business was boarded up, firefighters helped Flemons get electronics and boxes out of the building.

Tax Time is a tax preparation and business consulting company. Flemons said the fire and police departments gave him permission to go inside and get the documents, although it was risky.

“It’s unsecure, there’s no alarms, our computers aren’t working, the electric is not working. so I can’t be at home resting knowing I have someone’s pertinent information in here and it’s just out here, so we’re taking our due diligence to make sure that we get what’s needed and taking it to a secure place,” he said.
